About

I’ve been there. That’s why this site exists.

Most business advice online is written by people who have never run a truck, pulled a permit, or had to explain a bid to a client standing in their driveway. This site is different.

The Short Version

I was a Marine engineer officer and noncommissioned officer for almost 30 years — wood frame construction, runway repair, stump and tree removal, demolition, pre-engineered buildings, landing pads. Planning jobs, ordering materials, managing costs and schedules, dealing with vendors, and adapting when the specs changed mid-job. Which they always did.

After retiring, I worked construction management on the civilian side. Different clients, same fundamentals — keep it on budget, keep it on schedule, and protect both sides when things go sideways.

I know what it feels like to quote a job from scratch with no template, figure out vendor pricing on the fly, and hand a bid to someone who is going to push back on every line. That experience is what this site is built on.

Why BootstrapperToolbox Exists

The exterior home service industry is full of people who are great at the work and struggling with the business side. Not because they are not smart or not working hard. Because nobody taught them the pricing, the legal setup, the tax obligations, or how to build a route that doesn’t bleed drive time.

This site is the resource I wish had existed. Practical, direct, built for operators who are doing the work and don’t have time for answers buried in six paragraphs of setup.

How This Site Works

  • Every guide is written for the operator, not the algorithm. We lead with the answer. We give you the real numbers. We tell you what to skip. We do not pad articles to hit a word count.
  • The tools are genuinely free. Every calculator and template on this site is free. No email wall, no trial period. Built for contractors who are watching every dollar.
  • We are honest about how we earn money. Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and buy something, we may earn a commission. It does not cost you more and it does not change what we recommend. See our Disclaimer for full details.
  • We keep it current. Licensing requirements change. Tax rules change. Software gets better or worse. We review and update content regularly so you are not making decisions based on outdated information.
  • We are not a law firm or accounting firm. The content here is educational. For advice specific to your situation, work with a licensed attorney or CPA. We will tell you when you need one and what questions to bring them.

If you are just getting started, the best place to begin is the guided roadmap. It maps the full journey from zero to a running operation and links to every relevant guide, tool, and template on the site.
